Each holiday season since 1980 the Children’s Bank, a program of the Children’s Connection, has reached out to those children most in need in our communities. The Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) provides us with a list of specific holiday wishes collected from the children they serve. These children are abused and at-risk children, many of whom are living in foster families and struggling with frightening and unclear futures. For many children this is the only gift they will receive. League members donate a gift written on ornaments from our Wish Tree.
The Homes with Hope Community Kitchen in the center of Westport serves meals to men, women and children 365 days a year. The League provides dinner and dessert the third Thursday of every month for approximately 40 people. This opportunity is one of most popular Community Service events because it provides food to people in desperate need in our town.
McGivney Christmas Store
Each year McGivney hosts the annual Christmas Store, a highly anticipated event that helps members experience the rewards of earning and giving early in life. Each member has been earning points for good grades, positive conduct, and good citizenship. Members were then able to “spend” these points at the Christmas Store, and choose gifts for family members. Each year the league provides volunteers for one afternoon in December, to help the children “shop” for their gifts and wrap them. We also donate gifts for the Christmas store.
Each year League members assemble bags of Valentine’s treats for the Home Delivered Meals program which is run from the Westport Senior Center and for Canal Park, a senior housing development in Westport and for the girls at Project Return.
The bags are filled with candy, chocolates (diabetic or regular), apples and clementines donated by league members.
