WYWL Community Service

The Westport Young Woman’s League members arrange various charitable collections and food drives for organizations that help people in need in Westport and our neighboring communities. Some of the organizations we support include: Homes with Hope (Community Kitchen, Gillespie Shelter, Bacharach Community), The Westport Department of Human Services, CT Department of Children and Families (Children’s Bank), Cardinal Shehan Center, Mercy Learning Center, Caroline House,  Ralphola Community Center, Project Alpha, Bridgeport Rescue Mission and Norwalk/Bridgeport Hospitals.

Community Kitchen

The Homes with Hope Community Kitchen in the center of Westport serves meals to men, women and children 365 days a year. The League provides dinner and dessert the third Thursday of every month for approximately 40 people. This opportunity is one of most popular Community Service events because it provides food to people in need in our town.

Wish Tree

Each holiday season since 1980 the Children’s Bank, a program of the Children’s Connection, has reached out to those children most in need in our communities. The Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) provides us with a list of specific holiday wishes collected from the children they serve. These children are abused and at-risk children, many of whom are living in foster families and struggling with frightening and unclear futures. For many children this is the only gift they will receive. League members donate a gift written on ornaments from our Wish Tree.

Ralphola Community Center – Holiday Store

The Westport Young Woman’s League collect gifts and helps to organize an annual Holiday Store for the children who attend the Ralphola Community Center in Bridgeport. These children earn points for good behavior at the center and doing their homework for school. They use their points to “buy” gifts at the Holiday Store for their parents and siblilngs. The following day, the parents “shop” for their children. For most of the kids at the center, this is the only gift they or their parents will receive during the holiday season. The kids learn the value of giving and are so excited to be able to give a gift to their family members.

Westport Senior Center

Each year League members assemble bags of  treats or flowers for the Home Delivered Meals program which is run from the Westport Senior Center. There are many other opportunities for member to collaborate with the Senior Center like delivering Meals on Wheels, Serving Lunch at the Senior Center, Baking for bingo (or really any time!), organizing and running events (like High Tea) and having kids color place mats for Senior’s birthday lunches. The Westport Senior Center is located in the heart of downtown Westport and is run by the Department of Human Services.

Alpha Community Services

Alpha Community Services provides the basic human needs for shelter, dignity and self sufficiency by providing a range of housing opportunities and support services. Located in Bridgeport, they are one of the only organizations that provide family shelters, keeping the families with children together. We have periodic collections to help Alpha Community Services provide needed items to the families and children housed in the shelters.
